UFC 128 weigh-in: Rua has a message for ‘disrespectful’ Jones

Jon Jones was hyped up today at the UFC 128. Frankly, he's been hyped up all week long to the point of signing autographs, "Jon Jones, UFC champion 2011."

Is that cocky or confident? The UFC light heavyweight Mauricio "Shogun" Rua is irked.

"I really feel it's disrespectful," Rua told UFC analyst Joe Rogan during today's weigh-in. "That's okay, tomorrow we'll see who's the better man."

Both fighters made the weight limit of 205 pounds. The other 22 fighters on the card also made weight without incident.

There wasn't any pushing or heat evident during the Rua-Jones staredown. In what is becoming the norm for Jones, the 23-year-old refused to make eye contact with his opponent.

Kurt Pellegrino did the same to Gleison Tibau, as the Brazilian stood with his hands on his hips. The happiest guy at the weigh-in appeared to be Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. He was all smiles on stage and stepped on the scale in some stylish black socks.

Lack of submissions lead to dual knockout bonuses at UFC 128

The men competing Saturday night in Newark, New Jersey as part of “UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones” took the region?s infamous association with ?fist-pumping? to a new level inside the Octagon at the event with five flattenings dished out on the card including those to a handful of fighters who had never previously fallen in [...]

QUOTABLES: Josh Barnett on Zuffa's purchase of Strikeforce "This is major... I just want to be a part of that"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

BarnettJosh_150_16.jpg

"Things have changed. This is major and great things can come from it and I just want to be a part of that, and the way I can best do that is be the best fighter I can be. I'm not here to make this a personal vendetta or judgment with [Dana White], especially in terms of business. I know what I've got to do and I know what his position is in terms of being the president of the UFC, and that he has excelled at. He's done a great job.

If [Dana] hates me, he hates me; but if he sees the value in what I bring to the table as a fighter I think that will speak for itself. But you know what? I don't hate Dana and I do business, and I'll go out there and do the absolute best that I can do and if he happens to be my employer... literally, if Dana White has an office that I have to write into every day, because that's the person I report to for my business, well that's what I'll do...

There is a part of me that absolutely wishes that things between myself and the UFC had worked out differently. I was 23, 24-years-old at the time and I took advice from where I took it and I tried to do what I thought was the best thing at the time, but this guy that is sitting here talking to you now would tell that kid [that] he was a moron...

Dana likes to go out there and crush, kill, pillage, whatever; and let?s face it, that's kind of my M.O. As much as I may have ever had difficulty with Dana at the end of the day there is a part of me that absolutely vibes with what he is does.

Whether he wants to think about it or not, here and now, no bulls**t, Dana White is pretty f**king metal and I am a metal dude... we'll at least have that sort of respect that can't be overlooked...

I know the biggest thing that will affect my career, and that's going out there and winning this tournament. That's the biggest thing that I can actually make a difference in, that's something I actually have control over."

-Josh Barnett talks to Sherdog.com and reacts to Zuffa's purchase of Strikeforce, as well as changes his tune on UFC President Dana White.

Penick's Analysis: There's no love lost between Dana and Barnett, but Barnett is smart enough to play the game now that his fate lies in the hands of the UFC following the end of his contract with Strikeforce. If he passes all his drug tests and handles things with the commissions and makes things less difficult for those running the show, it's not impossible that things can be patched up with him and the UFC. Dana's taken many fighters back in that he's feuded with, and if he can bring Tito Ortiz back into the fold, Barnett can certainly be brought back in the future. Barnett has taken the exact opposite path of Paul Daley, and Daley would be smart to keep his issues to himself for the time being, and if he can also play the game White's stance of him "never" being back in the UFC could be softened.

UFC 128: Edson Barboza Beats Anthony Njokuani

by Michael David SmithEdson Barboza defeats Anthony Njokuani at UFC 128.aEdson Barboza capped a close victory over Anthony Njokuani with a highlight-reel kick in the final seconds of a good battle Saturday at UFC 128.

Barboza's spinning back kick connected to Njokuani's face with only a couple of seconds to go in the third and final round, and that highlight-reel kick may have been just enough to give the round and the fight to Barboza, who won 29-28 on all three judges' cards.

The victory improved Barboza's professional MMA record to 8-0. Njokuani improved to 13-4.

White UFC 128 vlog: More N.Y. lobbying

With or without approval from New York, there's little doubt the UFC will prosper and grow. The amount of time and effort put in to convince that state that MMA should be legalized, is beginning to border on ridiculous, but folks from Zuffa made another trip to Albany, the state capital of New York. Strikeforce folks have done their work as well. You almost wonder if it's all worth it.

Dana White's first vlog, in anticipation of UFC 128, starts in Albany. A crew that included UFC lightweight champ Frank Edgar spoke to legislators. Then the promotion held a seminar in the city. Edgar even allowed Nicole Hart, a local news reporter at WTEN to put him in a read-naked choke.

During today's UFC 128 prefight press conference at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, White spoke about the safety of the sport. He also had another New York legislator backing him up. Joel talked about the positives of MMA.

"I grew up watching boxing on TV; I grew up watching WWF, then turned to WWE," said New York City Council Majority Leader Joel Rivera during today's press conference (quotes via MMAjunkie). "It motivated me to get into the gym; it motivated me to want to join martial arts. This is the impact that MMA and UFC has on our next generation of leadership, and that's why I think it's important that we bring it here to our great city and to Madison Square Garden where these fighters deserve the opportunity to fight.

Rivera, much like state assemblyman Dean Murray did during a presser an MSG in January, is calling for the N.Y. lunacy to come to an end.

"It's about time that government takes off the shackles, government opens up the doors, rolls out the red carpet, and allows the UFC into New York City," said Rivera.

The vlog also features some cools moments with Diego Sanchez and Joe Rogan/Joe Silva in the Octagon plus White and owner Lorenzo Fertitta giving the fighter props in the bowels of the Yum! Center.
